Understanding Interoception

Much of our inner life happens without words.

Subtle shifts in sensations like breath or tension are constantly shaping how we feel, respond, and relate to the world around us. Interoception is the sense that helps us notice and interpret these signals.

This space brings together articles that explore how interoception influences emotional experience, mental health, and everyday well-being—and how it can be strengthened over time.

Interoception can be understood in three interconnected steps: noticing body signals, making sense of what they may mean, and responding in ways that support balance.

These signals—such as changes in breathing, heart rate, or energy—are present all the time. What varies is how clearly we notice them, how we interpret them, and how we respond. Over time, these processes shape how we experience emotions, manage stress, and care for ourselves. Interoception helps bring these signals into awareness, allowing emotions to feel more understandable and less overwhelming.
